Florida Museum of Natural History graduate student receives best paper award from UF Biology Department

Julie Allen recently received the 2009 Best Paper Award from the University of Florida biology department. Allen won the award for her paper, “Mutational meltdown in primary endosymbionts: selection limits Muller’s ratchet.” The article appeared in PLoS ONE in March 2009.

Graduate students’ and museum faculty member’s paper published in PLoS One

Catalina Pimiento, Dana Ehret, Dr. Bruce MacFadden, and associate’s paper, “Ancient Nursery Area for the Extinct Giant Shark Megalodon from the Miocene of Panama” was published in this week’s edition of the journal PLoS ONE. The article is the first thorough study of megalodon juveniles and gives scientists a better picture of shark behavior. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0010552

Biology undergraduate researcher receives NOAA grant

Robbie McNutly, an undergraduates working in Dr. Silliman’s lab, was awarded a NOAA’s Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for his outstanding academic achievement and work on multiple predator effects in marine systems. This scholarship program provides academic assistance for two academic years, and funding for summer research and travel to national conferences (up to 25k).

Biology undergraduate researcher receives award from USA TODAY

Ralph Jacobi, an undergraduate working in Dr. Silliman’s lab, has been named a member of the 2010 All-USA TODAY Community College First Team. He earned this award for his outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and work on integrating positive interactions into marsh restoration ecology in Tampa Bay with the Tampa Bay Boy Scouts.
