Biology faculty Robert D. Holt co-authors study on the role of biodiversity on infectious diseases

As human populations and their needs grow, biodiversity is being lost at an unprecedented rate. How loosing diversity at all scales of life (genes, species and ecosystems) do affect humans? In a study published today, in the journal Nature, Robert D. Holt and his colleagues review how biodiversity affects the spread and emergence of infectious diseases. For instance, they highlight how the reduction of Virginia opossum populations contribute to the spread of Lyme disease.
