The University of Florida’s Department of Biology relies on private support to sustain its commitment to academic excellence, allowing an environment for our students and faculty to question, discover, and connect. Through the generosity of dedicated alumni and donors, we foster research opportunities, facilitate professional development programming and contribute to community outreach and engagement. Your gift enables us to broaden and enhance our initiatives, emphasizing the crucial role of biology, botany, and zoology in scientific advancement and public understanding.
“I am thrilled to have financial support from the Matthew Smith Animal Behavior Fellowship to be able to complete this project, investigating the anti-predator role of elaborate hindleg flags in coreid bugs. This work will provide novel insight into an arthropod trait that is compelling to both humans (these unusual-looking bugs often grace the cover of coffee table books about the Neotropics), as well as other animals. With the support of this fellowship, I and collaborators will complete one of the first predator-prey experiments using these bugs to better understand the evolution of elaborate traits as anti-predator signals in insects. I am immensely grateful for the support that this fellowship provides.”
– Juliette Rubin, 2023 Smith Fellow, PhD Candidate, Department of Biology
