Assistant Professor Todd Palmer was awarded a 5-year NSF CAREER award for his research on the mutualism between acacias and their ant bodyguards in Africa. Acacias can live over 100 years. During their lifetime, the trees associate with various species of ants which all have different effects on their hosts. The goal of this project is to evaluate how the costs and benefits of multiple partnerships integrate over the lifetime of these long-lived trees.
