To understand the consequences of major ecological catastrophes such as the BP oil spill, scientists need data before the event to understand how ecosystems are affected and how they recover from these disturbances. Dr. Karen Bjorndal is lead author on a paper to be published in tomorrow’s issue of the journal Science. The paper emphasizes seven elements that should be included in research plans seeking to monitor marine wildlife and assess recovery. Overall these elements call for better science by integrating data (e.g., effect of environment on demographic parameters), understanding interactions among individual threats (e.g., overfishing and pollution) and improving data sharing.
